Yep! ¡Sí! You absolutely can. Maybe you’re borrowing a car. Maybe you’re renting. Maybe you just bought a car and need coverage while you figure out your long-term situation. Whatever the reason, temporary car insurance (also called short-term car insurance) is exactly what it sounds like: coverage that lasts for a specific, limited time instead of the usual six months or year. Let’s break down everything you need to know. Get a Free Quote! What Counts as “Temporary” Car Insurance? Good question. Here’s the deal: Most standard car insurance policies run for 6 months to a year. Temporary insurance? That’s coverage for anywhere from a single day to a few months. Think of it like this: Standard insurance = A full meal plan at your favorite restaurant. Temporary insurance = Ordering exactly what you need, when you need it. Some common timeframes: 1 day to 7 days 1 week to 1 month 1 month to 6 months The exact length depends on your situation and what’s available in your area. When Do You Actually NEED Temporary Car Insurance? Great question. Here are the most common situations: You Just Bought a Car (But Haven’t Sorted Out Insurance Yet) You found the perfect car. You signed the papers. But your permanent insurance isn’t set up yet. Temporary coverage gets you from the dealership to your driveway legally. Then you can take your time shopping for the right long-term policy. You’re Borrowing Someone’s Car Your car’s in the shop. Your primo lets you borrow his. But wait – are you covered under his insurance? Maybe, maybe not. Temporary insurance makes sure YOU’RE protected while driving someone else’s vehicle. No awkward conversations if something goes wrong. You’re Test-Driving Life in a New City Moving somewhere for a few months for work or school? Need a car but don’t want to commit to a full policy yet? Short-term coverage gives you wheels and protection without locking you into a long-term contract You Only Drive Sometimes Maybe you usually take the bus or bike to work. But every now and then, you need a car for a road trip or weekend errands. Why pay for insurance all year when you only drive occasionally? Temporary coverage lets you get insured just when you need it. You’re Renting a Car (And Want Better Coverage) Rental car insurance from the rental company can be expensive and limited. Some people get temporary insurance instead for better protection at a better value. You Need to Move a Car Cross-Country Driving your friend’s car from California to Texas for them? You’ll want to be covered for that trip. Temporary insurance protects you (and the car) for the duration of the journey. You found the perfect car. You signed the papers. But your permanent insurance isn’t set up yet. Temporary coverage gets you from the dealership to your driveway legally. Then you can take your time shopping for the right long-term policy. Here’s the good news: temporary insurance isn’t some watered-down version of “real” insurance. It can include the same coverages as a standard policy: Liability Coverage: If you cause an accident, this covers damage to other people’s property and their medical bills. (This is required by law in most states.) Collision Coverage: Covers damage to your car if you hit something or get hit by another vehicle. Comprehensive Coverage: Protects your car from non-collision stuff like theft, vandalism, hail, or hitting a deer. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: If someone without insurance (or not enough insurance) hits you, this covers your costs. Medical Payments Coverage: Helps with medical bills for you and your passengers after an accident, no matter who’s at fault. Basically, you can get the same protection you’d get with a regular policy, just for a shorter time. Common Myths About Temporary Car Insurance (Let’s Clear These Up) Myth #1: “It’s way more expensive than regular insurance.” Not necessarily. Yes, the daily rate might seem higher, but you’re only paying for the exact time you need. If you only need a week of coverage, you’re not paying for six months you won’t use. Myth #2: “It’s not real insurance.” Wrong. Temporary insurance is legit insurance. It meets state requirements and covers you just like a standard policy. Myth #3: “It’s hard to get.” Nope. Getting temporary coverage is usually pretty quick and straightforward. You can often get a quote and coverage the same day. Myth #4: “You can’t get full coverage, just liability.” Not true. You can get comprehensive and collision coverage with temporary insurance, just like a regular policy. Myth #5: “Insurance companies don’t offer it.” Some do, some don’t. The key is finding the right company that understands your needs. (Hi, it’s us. Fiesta Auto Insurance. We understand.) Temporary vs. Regular

Stranded on the Road? Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Roadside Assistance. https://fiestainsurance.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-roadside-assistance/ https://fiestainsurance.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-roadside-assistance/#respond Wed, 18 Mar 2026 18:39:49 +0000 https://fiestainsurance.com/?p=4285 STRANDED ON THE ROAD? Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Roadside Assistance. Picture this: it’s late at night, you’re on a quiet highway, and your car suddenly dies. Your phone is at 10% battery, the nearest town is miles away, and you have no idea who to call. Sound familiar? For millions of drivers, this isn’t just a nightmare; it’s a reality that happens every single day. That’s exactly why roadside assistance exists. And if you don’t have a plan in place yet, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from what it covers to why having it could be the smartest decision you make as a driver. Get a Free Quote! What Is Roadside Assistance? Roadside assistance is a service designed to help drivers when their vehicle breaks down or becomes undrivable. Whether you have a flat tire, a dead battery, or are locked out of your car, a roadside assistance plan connects you with trained professionals who come directly to you, wherever you are. Think of it as a safety net for the open road. Instead of scrambling to find help or paying out-of-pocket for an emergency tow, you make one call, and help is on its way. What Does Roadside Assistance Typically Cover? Battery Jump-Starts A dead battery is one of the most common reasons drivers call for help. Roadside assistance sends a technician to jump-start your vehicle and get you moving again, fast. Towing Services If your car can’t be repaired on the spot, roadside assistance will arrange to tow it to the nearest service center or a mechanic of your choice. This alone can save you hundreds of dollars in emergency towing fees. Lockout Assistance Locked your keys inside the car? It happens to the best of us. A roadside assistance professional will come to unlock your vehicle without damaging it. Emergency Fuel Delivery Run out of gas in the middle of nowhere? Roadside assistance will deliver enough fuel to get you to the nearest gas station. Flat Tire Changes Whether your tire blows out on a busy interstate or a remote back road, a technician will come to change your flat and install your spare so you can continue your journey safely. Winching & Extraction Got stuck in mud, snow, or a ditch? Many roadside assistance plans include winching services to safely extract your vehicle and get you back on the road. MAX Tip: Not all roadside assistance plans are created equal. Always read what’s included, and make sure you’re covered for the situations most relevant to your lifestyle and driving habits. Why Every Driver Needs Roadside Assistance You might be thinking: “I’m a careful driver, I won’t need it.” But here’s the truth: vehicle breakdowns don’t discriminate. They happen to new cars and old ones. They happen in good weather and bad. They happen to experienced drivers just as often as new ones. Here are some compelling reasons why roadside assistance isn’t optional; it’s essential: Breakdowns Are More Common Than You Think According to industry data, a vehicle breakdown occurs every few seconds somewhere in the United States. Whether it’s a mechanical failure, tire issue, or dead battery, the chances of needing help on the road at some point in your driving life are extremely high. Emergency Services Are Expensive Without Coverage Without a plan, a single tow can cost significantly more than what you’d pay for a full year of roadside assistance coverage. Emergency locksmith fees, fuel delivery charges, and after-hours service rates add up fast. Having a plan means predictable, manageable costs. Safety Is Non-Negotiable Being stranded on the side of the road, especially at night or in bad weather, is genuinely dangerous. Roadside assistance minimizes the time you spend in a vulnerable position and gets you back to safety quickly. Peace of Mind Is Priceless There’s real comfort in knowing that no matter where you are or what goes wrong, help is just one phone call away. That mental ease is worth every penny, for you and your family. It’s Not Just for Emergencies Many roadside assistance plans also offer added benefits like travel discounts, trip interruption protection, and even concierge services. You might be surprised by how much value a comprehensive plan delivers beyond basic breakdown coverage. Your No-Stress Guide to Buying a Used Car https://fiestainsurance.com/your-no-stress-guide-to-buying-a-used-car/ https://fiestainsurance.com/your-no-stress-guide-to-buying-a-used-car/#respond Fri, 13 Feb 2026 22:24:31 +0000 https://fiestainsurance.com/?p=3800 Your No-Stress Guide to Buying a Used Car. Look, we get it. Buying a used car can feel like trying to find the perfect aguacate at the store; you gotta know what you’re looking for, or you might end up with something that looked good on the outside, pero está all mushy inside. But don’t worry. We’re breaking down everything you need to know so you can roll out in your new ride feeling like a boss, not like you just made a $7,000 mistake. ¡Ojo! Half the people who buy used cars find expensive problems in the first 6 months. Let’s make sure you’re NOT one of them. First Things First: What Can You Actually Afford? Here’s the thing: don’t just think about what the car costs today. Think about what it’s gonna cost you tomorrow, next month, and next year. The real cost breakdown: The sticker price: What you’re paying upfront. Insurance: Good news! Used cars usually cost way less to insure than brand new ones. Before you fall in love with that sports car, get a quote first. Trust us on this one. Gas money: Check the MPG. Your wallet will thank you later. Mantenimiento: Older cars need more TLC. Budget around $100-150 a month for upkeep. Registration and taxes: Yep, the government wants their cut too. Pro tip from Max: Get your insurance quote BEFORE you buy. No point in falling in love with a car you can’t afford to drive home. Get a Free Quote! The Walk-Around Check (No Mechanic Skills Needed) Outside the Car You don’t need to be a pro. Just look for these red flags: The paint: Does it all match? If not, somebody’s hiding something. The gaps: Check the space between doors and panels. If it’s all wonky, that’s a sign of accident damage. The tires: Wear should be even. If one side is más worn than the other, something’s off with the alignment. Rust spots: Especially under the car and in the wheel wells. Rust is like that one primo who shows up uninvited and never leaves. The glass: Any cracks? They spread. Fast. Inside the Car Smell test: Does it smell weird? Musty smell = water damage. And water damage es muy bad. Seats and dashboard: Should match the mileage. If the car has 50k miles but the driver’s seat looks like it survived la Segunda Guerra Mundial, someone’s lying. Test EVERYTHING: Windows, locks, AC, heat, radio, lights. Press all the buttons. All of them. Warning lights: Start the car. If the dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree, run. Pop the Hood You’re not looking for problems you can fix. You’re looking for reasons to say “no gracias.” Check for leaks: Look under the car. See any puddles? No bueno. The oil:  Pull the dipstick. Oil should be kinda clear, not black and gritty like yesterday’s cafecito. The belts: Cracks or fraying = they’re about to snap. Fluid levels: If they’re low, the owner didn’t care for this car. The Test Drive: Your Moment to Shine Don’t just go around the block. Take this baby for a REAL drive. Cold start: How does it sound before it warms up? Acceleration: Does it go smoothly, or does it hesitate like it’s thinking about it? Braking: Stops should be straight and smooth. No pulling, no weird noises. Highway test: Get it up to 65+ mph. How’s it feel? Stable or like it’s about to vibrate apart? Listen closely: Any squeaking, rattling, grinding, knocking? That’s the car telling you “Please don’t buy me, I’m tired.” Max’s move: If the seller says “don’t take it on the highway” or rushes you, that’s sus. Walk away. Get the Vehicle History Report For a couple of dollars, you can see EVERYTHING this car has been through. It’s like checking someone’s Instagram before you go on a date with them. What you’ll find out: Accident history. Title status. Real mileage. Service records. How many owners it’s had. Major red flags: Salvage or rebuilt title. Flood damage (these cars are never the same). Odometer rollback. Frame damage. Get It Checked by a Real Mechanic Best $100-150 you’ll ever spend. Take it to YOUR mechanic, not the seller’s “primo who knows cars.” They’ll check: Engine compression. Transmission. Brakes. Suspension. Electrical stuff. Exhaust system. If the seller says “no” to an inspection, that tells you everything you need to know. Next! Let’s Talk About the Price Do Your Homework First Know the fair price BEFORE you start talking numbers. Check these sites to know what the car’s really worth: Kelley Blue Book Edmunds Use What You Found to Negotiate Found problems? Use them. “The mechanic said the brakes need $800 of work. Can we adjust the price?” “This Carfax shows an accident. I’m worried about resale value down the road.” “Those tires are gonna need replacing soon. That’s $600 coming out of MY pocket.” When to Walk Away Listen to your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. There are literally millions of used cars out there. The right one is worth waiting for. No te apures. The Paperwork Part You need: Clean title (no liens, in the seller’s name). Bill of sale. Odometer disclosure (it’s the law). Any warranty info (get it in writing). Maintenance records if they got ’em. Private Seller vs. Dealer? Private seller Usually cheaper. Sold “as-is” (no warranty). You handle the DMV stuff. More room to negotiate. Dealer: Costs more but might include warranty. They do the paperwork. Sometimes financing options. Consumer protection applies. Usually cheaper. Sold “as-is” (no warranty). You handle the DMV stuff. More room to negotiate. Costs more but might include warranty. They do the paperwork. Sometimes financing options. Consumer protection applies. Before You Drive Away: Get Insured! Real talk, you can’t legally drive without insurance. And getting pulled over on the way home from buying your car? Not the vibe. Here’s the move: Get your quote BEFORE you pick up the car. That way you’re covered the

What’s an ITIN and Why You Need It https://fiestainsurance.com/whats-an-itin-and-why-you-need-it/ https://fiestainsurance.com/whats-an-itin-and-why-you-need-it/#respond Mon, 19 Jan 2026 20:40:43 +0000 https://fiestainsurance.com/?p=3644 What’s an ITIN and Why You Need It | Your Complete Guide to ITIN Numbers “I don’t Have a Social Security Number. Can I Pay My Taxes?” There’s a special number created exactly for people with this same issue. It’s called an ITIN, and it allows anyone to fulfill their tax responsibilities in the United States, regardless of immigration status. If you’ve ever felt confused, scared, or unsure about how to handle taxes without a Social Security number, this guide is for you. Let’s break it down in plain language, step by step. What is an ITIN? ITIN stands for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Think of it as a special tax ID number that the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) gives to people who need to file taxes but don’t qualify for a Social Security number. What Does an ITIN Look Like? Who Needs an ITIN? You might need an ITIN if you fall into any of these situations: You Work in the U.S. Without a Social Security Number If you earn income in the United States—whether from a job, freelance work, or your own small business—you’re required by law to file taxes. An ITIN allows you to do this legally. You’re a Spouse or Dependent of a Taxpayer Even if you don’t work, you may need an ITIN if: Your spouse wants to file taxes jointly with you You’re claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return You qualify for certain tax benefits You’re a Foreign Investor or Business Owner If you own property, investments, or a business in the U.S., you need an ITIN to report this income to the IRS. You’re on a Temporary Visa Some visa holders (like L-1 visa holders) and their spouses need ITINs to file U.S. tax returns. You Live in the U.S., Based on the “Substantial Presence Test” If you’ve spent enough time in the U.S. to be considered a resident for tax purposes but don’t qualify for a Social Security number, you’ll need an ITIN. Bottom line: If you have a connection to U.S. taxes and don’t have a Social Security number, an ITIN is your legal pathway to staying compliant. MEET A TAX PRO What Can You Do WITH an ITIN? An ITIN is powerful because it allows you to: File Your Tax Returns Legally Pay your taxes and avoid penalties. This shows you’re following U.S. tax law. Claim Certain Tax Credits While not all tax benefits are available to ITIN holders (more on this below), you can still claim important credits like: Child Tax Credit (if your child has a Social Security number) Credit for Other Dependents (if your dependent has an ITIN) Build a Financial Paper Trail Filing taxes with an ITIN creates a record that you’re contributing to the U.S. economy. This can be helpful if you later apply for legal status or citizenship. Open Bank Accounts Some banks and credit unions accept ITINs to open checking and savings accounts. Apply for Credit While more difficult than with a Social Security number, some lenders and financial institutions will work with ITIN holders to build credit history. Let’s be clear about what an ITIN is NOT: An ITIN does NOT change your immigration status Having an ITIN doesn’t make you a legal resident or citizen. It’s simply a tax tool. An ITIN does NOT give you work authorization You cannot use an ITIN to prove you’re allowed to work in the U.S An ITIN does NOT qualify you for Social Security benefits Even if you pay Social Security taxes using an ITIN, you won’t receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits. An ITIN does NOT qualify you for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) This is one of the biggest tax credits, but it requires a valid Social Security number. An ITIN cannot be used as identification outside of taxes You can’t use your ITIN to board a plane, get a driver’s license, or prove your identity for non-tax purposes. Understanding Tax Credits for ITIN Holders Not all tax credits are available to everyone, so let’s clarify what you can and cannot claim: Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) You CAN claim this if: You have an ITIN Your child has a Social Security number You meet all other Child Tax Credit requirements This credit can be worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child. Credit for Other Dependents You CAN claim up to $500 per dependent if: Your dependent has an ITIN (not a Social Security number) Your dependent is a U.S. resident They meet the qualifying rules (but don’t qualify for the full Child Tax Credit) Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) You CANNOT claim this credit if: You have an ITIN (it requires a Social Security

Congrats on your new car! New or used, big or small, what’s important is that it’s yours! When it comes to protecting your ride, take my advice: don’t rely on luck, it’s better to get it insured. So don’t wait another minute, come see me at your nearest Fiesta office and I’ll get you all set up today! It’s required for your lease or loan. Who pays cash for anything, especially a car?! Chances are you’ll have to get a loan or you maybe you’re leasing your car, and that my friend, is another reason why you need car insurance: it’s required in the financing paperwork. So, come see me at a nearby Fiesta office on your way to the agencia, and find out how we can protect your purchase. Helps you save money. You got that right! Without auto insurance you would have to pay every cent to repair your car – and maybe even the other person’s – after an accident. Or if your car got stolen, you’d have to make up that entire loss out of your own pocket. But, with Fiesta Auto Insurance, we will help protect you from these huge costs. You can avoid lawsuits. If you’re in an accident and it’s your fault, and you don’t have insurance, guess what? You could get sued by the other driver, and that could cost you more than your car! No amount of luck will get you out of a lawsuit, but a good car insurance will! Protects your passengers. It’s always a good idea to protect your passengers (even your suegra!), and a good car insurance can do just that. Depending on your coverage, you could get protection for your passengers in case they’re injured in an accident. That means peace of mind for you in case something really bad happens, because you’ll have one less thing to worry about. Now that you know why you need car insurance, you can take a deep breath and relax, knowing that Fiesta’s got you covered at every turn of the road. Happy driving!

Getting Your Car Insurance Policy https://fiestainsurance.com/getting-your-car-insurance-policy/ https://fiestainsurance.com/getting-your-car-insurance-policy/#respond Mon, 16 Dec 2024 06:32:42 +0000 http://fiestainsurance.com/?p=1642 Getting Your Car Insurance Policy Getting Your Car Insurance Policy Max Tells You What Information to Bring Find out what information you need to get your car insurance policy quickly from fiesta auto insurance. “Max, what documents do I need to bring to get my car insurance policy from Fiesta?” I hear this question all the time, and I love it when you want to be prepared to come and visit me at your local Fiesta office! So on that note, here’s what you need to bring so we can help you get your car insurance policy all set up. Driver’s license: Some people might tell you that you don’t need it, but let me tell you: you need a driver’s license to drive, and to get a car insurance policy. ¡No te compliques la vida! And if you want your spouse and teenage kids in your insurance, bring their licenses too! Vehicle information or registration: If your car is already registered, bring that with you. If you just bought or leased the car, bring the papers from the dealer. What the Fiesta team will be looking for is basic information about the car, like the make, model, year and VIN. Our team will also ask where you keep the car and what you use it for, so we can get you the right car insurance policy. Current or prior insurance: If you already have insurance, let us have a look at it when you stop by our office so we can have an idea of the level of coverage you have. We’ll also look for ways to save you money! Information about you: Just the basics, name, age, address, date of birth, driving history. Keep it simple, that’s what I say! Bank information: This is sort of optional, so don’t worry. If you want to make your monthly insurance payments directly from your bank account, we can help. If you want to come in and pay cash, we’re always happy to see you and answer any questions! As you can see, the documents needed for car insurance are pretty basic, things you probably have in the guantera already. So just make a little detour after work and visit your nearest Fiesta office and we’ll get you set up. See you soon!

What To Do After a Car Accident: Your Safety Checklist https://fiestainsurance.com/what-to-do-after-a-car-accident-your-safety-checklist/ https://fiestainsurance.com/what-to-do-after-a-car-accident-your-safety-checklist/#respond Mon, 16 Dec 2024 06:27:57 +0000 http://fiestainsurance.com/?p=1635 What To Do After a Car Accident: Your Safety Checklist What To Do After a Car Accident: Your Safety Checklist know what to do after a car accident so that you and your family are safe and you protect your car and finances Hope for sunshine, prepare for rain. That’s my motto when it comes to planning for the unexpected – and unfortunate – car accident. And if you don’t have a crystal ball that tells you when an accident will happen, the next best thing is to know what to do afterwards. Because let’s get real, it can happen to anyone, any time, any place. Here’s my advice for what to do after a car accident: Check for injuries: Are you and your passengers ok? Check yourselves for bleeding and injuries, did you hurt your neck or back? Try not to move. Get to safety: If you can, move your car slowly out of harm’s way to the shoulder of the highway, next to the sidewalk or a parking lot. If you can’t, then try to get yourself and your passengers out of the car and out of harm’s way, by walking away from the accident. Call 911: If you are injured you may need to call an ambulance for help. If you are in a serious accident or other people are injured you may also need to call the police so they can document the scene of the accident. Calling the police is also important because their documentation of the accident will help you with any insurance claims.    Wait for help: Turn off your car’s engine, turn on the hazards and wait for help. This will alert other drivers to slow down. Exchange information: Most states require this step, and it will help your insurance company provide you the support you need. Exchange the following contact information with the other driver: Full name Address and phone Insurance company name and policy number Driver’s license number License plate Vehicle make, model, color Accident location, date, time Document what happened: For your protection, and to help with the insurance claims process, make sure you get the following information: Police report, including names of the officers at the scene Take pictures of the accident with your phone Names of people involved, including passengers and witnesses Your own notes about what happened, road conditions, weather, what the other car was doing, etc. Call your insurance company and file a claim: Call your insurance company to get help with next steps, such as having an adjuster inspect your car and filing a claim. What is Homeowners Insurance? https://fiestainsurance.com/what-is-homeowners-insurance/ https://fiestainsurance.com/what-is-homeowners-insurance/#respond Mon, 16 Dec 2024 06:25:03 +0000 http://fiestainsurance.com/?p=1628 What is Homeowners Insurance? What is Homeowners Insurance? MAX HAS THE ANSWER! KNOW WHAT IS HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE, WHEN IT IS REQUIRED, AND WHAT IT COVERS. Surrounded by toda tu familia you insert the key, you hear that little click, and turn the knob. And just like that a new chapter begins: life in your new home. It’s now time to ask yourself two basic questions: what is homeowners insurance, and why do you need it? The answers will help you protect your family’s biggest investment! What is homeowners insurance? Basically, it’s like car insurance but for your home. It offers you financial protection in case something happens to your home or in it, like an accident or a disaster. The average home insurance policy combines protection for the property – meaning the house – and liability, for example if someone gets hurt in your house. Homeowners insurance can also have optional coverages that you can add. Want to protect that shed you built last summer? Need protection for floods or earthquakes? These coverages are additional to a standard home insurance coverage. Why do you need homeowners insurance? My advice is to look at this way: it’s better to have it than not! Besides, in some cases homeowners insurance could be required. Your lender might require it (just like in a car loan!). Typically, as part of the mortgage process you’ll be asked to show proof of insurance for your home. This is because the bank lending you the money wants to make sure that the investment is protected in case it’s damaged or destroyed. Here’s another reason why it’s a good idea to have homeowners insurance: if major damage happens to your house (imagine if a tree fell on the roof), fixing it out of your own pocket could be expensive. Or if your cousin slips on the kitchen floor during a posada, that would be an expensive trip to the hospital! But with the right insurance, you would have coverage for these situations and not have to worry about such huge bills. Come visit us at your nearest Fiesta office so we can get you the right home insurance coverage. We do the work, and you can focus on enjoying your new home with your family and friends. What Does Homeowners Insurance Cover? https://fiestainsurance.com/what-does-homeowners-insurance-cover/ https://fiestainsurance.com/what-does-homeowners-insurance-cover/#respond Mon, 16 Dec 2024 06:20:46 +0000 http://fiestainsurance.com/?p=1621 What Does Homeowners Insurance Cover? What Does Homeowners Insurance Cover? MAX WILL TELL YOU! GET ANSWERS TO THE QUESTION WHAT DOES HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE COVER, SO YOU CAN PROTECT YOUR HOME AND FAMILY I get it, sometimes a homeowners policy can be a bit more involved than the auto policy that you’re used to, leading you to ask: what does homeowners insurance cover, anyways? Good question! Let me break it down for you, so you can protect your family and your investment. A homeowners policy generally covers four main things: Your house. Some call it the dwelling or the structure. Typically, your homeowners policy covers the dwelling in case of damage caused by things such as a fire, hurricane, lightning or other disasters that are listed in your policy. Most homeowners policies will also cover structures attached to your house, like the garage. Here’s a good rule of thumb that I like to follow when buying a homeowners policy: get enough coverage to rebuild your house – por si las dudas. Oh, before I forget: coverage for floods and earthquakes is not included in a standard homeowners policy, so you need to buy those separately. Your personal property. This refers to the things you own that you keep inside your home. So, if your furniture or your TV are damaged or stolen, your homeowners policy will likely help pay to replace them or fix them. Keep in mind that there are limits to this coverage, so some things like antiques or expensive jewelry may need special coverage. Liability. This basically protects you from lawsuits in case someone who doesn’t live in your home gets hurt while in the house. For example, if a guest trips on the stairs and they fall, liability coverage may help pay for their medical bills and keep you from getting sued. Additional living expenses. Some homeowners policies will include this, and it’s good to have! Known as ALE, this helps you cover expenses for living away from home due to damage caused by something covered by your policy. Imagine your home is damaged by lightning and you cannot be in the house while it is repaired, and this is covered by your policy. In that case, ALE will help you cover hotel expenses (so you don’t have to sleep at your suegros’) up to a certain limit, while your home is being fixed. I hope this answers the question of what does homeowners insurance cover.
